Sounds I would regard as evocative of an era (comment)
Would that someone has a sound clip of the 50s – 60s Southend pier trains and the entertainment at the pier head. With a westerly breeze especially, the iconic sound scape of the distinctive green and cream cars, of their bogies over the joints and points, could be heard as we played on the beaches at Chalkwell. Evocative and subtly different from the current trains.
Travelling up to the King George’s extension to hear the summer shows hosted by Jerry Jerome and the piano playing of Nancy Mount in ‘Out of the Blue’ and other similar reviews. Some of that hopefully exists on shellac 78s or tape.
Barrington Phelung ,the Southend composer (Morse theme and incidentals, Murder on the Orient Express movie track) played a benefit concert there more recently (90s). Are these sort of thing perhaps not admissible to the archive?

You can sometimes get brief snatches on Pathe newsreel but there tends to be a lot of commentary and soundtrack. Longer unused footage tends to be silent but I presume sound must have been recorded at some point in case they were going to marry them up so, perhaps it’s in a vault somewhere.
Thanks for your thoughts! These are some great descriptions of past sounds.
They would all probably be a nice addition to the Essex Sound and Video Archive, if anyone had them to share with us.
