Yachts at Blackwater Sailing Club, Heybridge Basin

It was a gorgeous and hot sunny summer’s day, but there was a fair old breeze blowing… perfect for capturing a sound that many people have mentioned during our public surveys: the sound of halyards clanging against boat masts in the wind.
I took a walk along the sea wall at Heybridge Basin with my friend Ruth Philo, who herself is a sailor. Her knowledge of all the boats, and how races actually work, was invaluable, as there was plenty of action from the members of the Blackwater Sailing Club. One of the club members kindly let us walk amongst the craft to find a couple of spots to record the sound. The first recording is nearer smaller boats and the second amongst the larger yachts. You can also hear a few people wheeling boats and hauling kit in readiness for the day’s racing.
