Southend Pier Head bell, 2016
There’s a bell at the end of Southend Pier. I presume it’s a leftover from some fog warning signal. I don’t know how it used to strike; there’s nothing obvious, except someone has rigged up a clapper. As it was pretty windy, it was banging into the bell every now and again.
Largely by accident the mic isn’t being buffeted, but you can hear the actual wind noise. You might also be able to hear voices; these are a couple of men fishing from the very western end of the pier, a deck below, you can walk around it but it’s only one person wide. The wooden structure to the left in the photo is the baffle for the fog horn.
Recorded 10.00am time. Windy.
