Southend-on-Sea fog horns, 2013
Recorded between about 10.00-10.30pm in foggy weather. Not quite real time, as I’ve cut out wind noise, clicks, and bangs, but from about halfway it’s pretty accurate.
Jubilee Beach, one of the kiosks, has a terrace on the sea side, and I recorded it mostly there trying to shelter from the wind. The first part is from the sea wall I think, then you can hear the tide from the terrace.
You hear birds, water, and possibly ships’ generators. The pier fog horn is the long and short high electronic note. It’s a bit faint because there is a baffle board behind it. The other booming horn is off to the east in The Southend Anchorage; I’m pretty sure it’s from a ship called Zhong Hai.
Why did I record it? Because I like it.

Depends on the weather and atmosphere, you can hear them inland, I’ve got a recording from home, up by The Elms, clearly audible. I would have heard this one from ’round about the High Street and gone down to the sea front and headed east a bit as it got louder.
Another lovely atmospheric recording. Thank you! I wonder how far the sound of the fog horns travel. Can you hear them from the town centre on a quiet night, or even further inland?
