Bell Wharf, Leigh: Birds, tide and ship's engine, 2007
Recorded around about 11.15pm. It must have been a fairly calm night. The tide was out, so there are no waves breaking, but you can hear the tide running across the mud. You also hear birds of various types, even though it is evening.
You hear a ship passing in Sea Reach, the engine noise rising as it gets closer. I recorded it because I like it. Even back then, it was obvious you didn’t hear passing ships as often as you used to, and you didn’t get what I presume are old marine engines, which sent out waves of sound, loud and almost felt as much as heard, as often as before.

Thanks for this recording, and for having the foresight to record what might be a declining sound in Essex.
