Ironwell Lane, Rochford, 2016 (2)
The second of two recordings (the first is here).
I walked a bit further up the lane to record any passersby. There weren’t any. There was evidence of someone riding a motorbike along here, but no cars come this way any more, even though from either end there is nothing to stop them.
As I walked along I recalled a cassette tape I digitised for Rochford artist Amy Frampton a few years back. It contained a great audio tour of the town by Peter Whittingham, local legend. He describes a time when stage coaches used to head along here, on their way to Hockley and beyond. It’s hard to imagine that now. It is sadly somehow easier to imagine some highwaymen robbing from the poor and giving to Cash Converters.
