Excerpts from talk given by Brigadier John Theodore de Horne Vaizey (1899-1982) to Tilbury Juxta Clare parish council meeting, 23 May 1978 (SA 24/1002/1). The talk includes recollections of his childhood at Tilbury Hall; agriculture; charitable work done by his mother; the agricultural workers’ strike at Ridgewell in 1914; and the outbreak of the First World War. The descriptions of the village and surrounding area situate the content of this recording at a specific time and place.
However, we are not sure where to situate the recording itself. Where were parish council meetings held in 1978? Are they still held there? Do they still feature talks about the locality? Have the voices that can be heard in a typical meeting changed since 1978?
