Livestock has been traded in Chelmsford since medieval times. Hilda Grieve's talk on the city in 1381 gives a vivid description of what the market then would have been like. Compare that with the sound of the cattle market in the 1950s; the site of the cattle market now (High Chelmer); the open markets now held in Chelmsford High Street; and the livestock markets in Stanford near Colchester. They are all sites of buying and selling, but would you know it just by the sounds?
