Colchester United played football at their Layer Road stadium from 1937 until 2008. One of their finest hours came in 1971, when they beat Leeds United, then top of the League, in a fifth-round FA Cup match, bringing United to the quarter-finals. On 26 April 2008, the Club played their final match at the Layer Road stadium. They moved to the new Weston Homes Community Stadium, playing their first match there on 4 August. The old stadium was pulled down, replaced with a housing estate.
