Recollections of Witham Secondary Modern School, recorded in 1978
Lucy Croxall was one of the first schoolteachers at Witham Secondary Modern School when it first opened in 1937. In this clip she describes her decision to take up the post and the catchment area covered by the school. She later became Headmistress there.
The school became known as Bramston School, and is now Maltings Academy. How do you think Lucy’s experiences might relate to teachers at the school today?
You can hear this clip and others on Witham’s listening bench. You can also explore the transcripts of hundreds of other oral history interviews about Witham on Janet Gyford’s History of Witham site, or listen to some of the recordings through Essex Archives Online.
