Sunset Ceremony at Shoeburyness Garrison, 1980
Shoeburyness Garrison Gatehouse
DeFacto
Part of the annual Sunset Ceremony held at Shoeburyness Garrison, consisting mostly of military and other music performed by the Royal Artillery Band from Woolwich. This clip includes some of the music; a gun salute (approx. 1m 45s in); the national anthem; and the marching out music.
The military has had a presence on Shoeburyness since 1849, with a School of Gunnery established in 1859. The gradual relocation of units and privatisation of the land began in the Second World War. By the time of this recording, Garrison Headquarters had already closed. The final sunset ceremony was held in 1998, before the unit finally became QinetiQ in 2001 (information taken from the QinetiQ website).
The recording was made by Edward Haley and has been digitised from the original 1/4-inch open reel tape. You can listen to the full recording on Essex Archives Online.
