Many and varied are the attractions and superlatives of Essex, one of them, or just over half of it is, The Thames Flood Barrier. Spanning the river and county boundary, Essex to Kent, Kent to Essex, Silvertown to New Charlton and vice versa.
For a few years now Waverley has been doing the trip out to the Thames Forts on a weekday rather than the weekend, starting and finishing at Tower Pier, perfect.
This recording is from the return trip, on the Essex side of the river, no commentary as we’d heard it on the way out. The tide was low and if you listen carefully near the end you should be able to hear a change in tone and slight increase in volume as it passses through the span.
The daytime pictures are from the trip out and show the Silvertown shore. The evening pictures do show a woman standing on the paddle box making a recording, which she did all day; think the sound is going to be mixed in with music but don’t know more than that.
