Radio transmissions, Low Lighthouse, Harwich, 2016
View from the outer platform of the Harwich Low Lighthouse
Stuart Bowditch
Having done some work with artist Ruth Philo about Orford Ness lighthouse, we paid a visit to the Low Lighthouse in Harwich, and had a very informative tour by Alex, one of the staff of the Harwich Maritime Museum, which is resident there. It’s a great little space with plenty to see inside, and the view from the outer platform across the estuary and out to sea is fantastic.
I also took the opportunity to record the shipping channel transmissions from the radio on the upper floor whilst the others were elsewhere.

This reminds me of visiting the museum in the port town where I grew up. As we explored the ship, suddenly the radio would burst into life. I was terrified that somehow the people on the other end would pick up anything I said, and the subsequent misinformation would cause shipping mayhem.
