Mucking Marsh, 2016
Artist Alan Hockett and I attempted to walk from the Coalhouse Fort in Tilbury, along the sea wall and coastal path to the new Essex Wildlife Trust building at Mucking, where we envisaged having a cup of tea and a piece of cake before heading back to the Fort. But the walk was halted when we discovered that we may actually be on the Mucking tip rather than on a path. The sea wall had disappeared a while back and we were following desire lines, but eventually the way became too boggy and wet, so we decided to head back to Gobian’s Sluice to eat one of Alan’s sandwiches (he’s always more prepared than me). Before we headed back however we both decided to make some recordings. In this one you can hear one of the big earth movers bring a load from over the hill. He reverses into position but then stops for quite some time (we image he’s radioing to the authorities about some trespassers) before tipping his load and then driving away.
