Leigh bell toll, 2017
Coming along Leigh Road, the bell at Our Lady of Lourdes and Saint Joseph started up. There were no chimes, it was five to eight so it wasn’t striking; if it wasn’t striking it would be tolling; if it was tolling it would go on for a while, so plenty of time to cross the road, get closer and sort out the recorder, and that’s what you hear.
This was for a Mission Service; they were having a whole month of them so may well have become familiar for that area of Leigh for a little while.
The image shows a bell hung in Margaretting Church, taken by the County Visual and Aural Aids Service in January 1972 (I/Mb 234/1/8).
