Essex Youth Orchestra Harwich Festival Concert, 1981
First piece from the concert performed by the Essex Youth Orchestra at the Harwich Festival on 5 July 1981 (SA 10/1/1/19/1). This piece is William Boyce’s first movement from his ‘Symphony No. 1’. To me, rather than representing the 1980s, this track perfectly evokes the eighteenth century, when it was composed – the kind of music you might hear while wandering around a historic stately home.
The full concert included the rest of Boyce’s first symphony, Tchaikovsky’s ‘Nutcracker Suite’, Beethoven’s seventh symphony, and Milhaud’s ‘La Creation du Monde’. It was conducted by Graham Treacher. Most of the tracks can be heard through the Essex Record Office Soundcloud account. The full recording can be heard in the Playback Room at the Essex Record Office Searchroom. Follow the link to the catalogue record below for more information.
How does this concert compare with the programme of the current Harwich Festival of the Arts? We are unsure exactly where this concert was performed – what venues in Harwich are popular for concerts today?
