Dawn chorus, Chelmsford, 2016
It is lovely to get away to one of the many quiet places in Essex to listen to the sounds of nature, but how much is audible in built-up areas?
I took this recording in the middle of a housing estate in Chelmsford. As part of International Dawn Chorus Day on 1 May, I started recording from around 4:15am, as sunrise was at 4:28am. Here are three clips from the recording:
Clip 1: At about 4:25am.
Clip 2 (02:30): Around 4:40am.
Clip 3 (03:58): Around 4:55am.
It is interesting how much the noise levels shift over that time, with more traffic obvious even before 5am on a Sunday. Also listen out for aeroplanes flying overhead.
Which birds can you hear? Comment below to help us identify them.
