Excerpt from a speech given by Right Reverend Derek Bond, then Bishop of Bradwell, at the Rochford District Council banquet in 1981 (SA 20/1681/1). Rt Rev Bond describes the rather derogatory comments that he discovered in history books about Rochford and Rayleigh, where the banquet was held. At least the audience appreciated his light-hearted approach.
The recording was made by Ted Haley, who captured a number of similar civic events in the Southend and Basildon areas. In this age of austerity, perhaps the Council no longer holds banquets. However, they do hold fundraising events, and they record their meetings, so there are still opportunities to capture civic life in Rochford.
