A12 (from Boxted Road), 2016

The third recording in response to public suggestions that traffic noise is a ‘sound of today’. Whilst finding locations to record from, I thought it would be interesting to choose locations where large roads have cut off or through older roads or rights of way.

In this instance it is the old Boxted Road next to Cuckoo Farm Studios, which is how I knew that this piece of old tarmac is there after having done an art project there in 2009. I was visiting a friend who has a studio there and thought I’d take along my recording kit to record from the old tarmac, which is slowly being covered by moss and other plants. The fence between the old road and the ‘new’ A12 Colchester bypass (built in 1982) is missing so you can get very close to the speeding traffic (not advised!). I made the recording between 2 and 3 pm, so as to be a good comparison to the previous traffic recordings on this site (A127 and M25).
